Original Write-up for the event:
It's time for a competition which will test your mapping, caching and, yes, even your mental prowess.
The competition takes place on June 19, 2004, and starts at the Cape Jourimain Information Center (the posted cords might be slightly off but everyone knows where it is), where all teams will meet up at 9:30AM. We start off at 10AM across the bridge and go our separate ways for the day, and then meet in the evening at a designated campground.
The Premise of the Competition: We start at the cape we meet at the camp, whoever gets the most caches on the Island (on this trip only) wins... meaning if you have already gotten a few of the caches on the island, you'd better hope others can't do the Island in a day ;-)
To identify each other on the road, I will hand out little ties to attach to your antennas for each cache you complete.
The end of the competition will be at about 7PM when we will be meeting at the campground called "Holiday Haven" at cords 46 12.769 63 11.228 (http://www.holidayhaven.pe.ca/) This is just outside of Cornwall,South-West of Charlottetown PEI.
I will be reserving a block of standard 2-way hookup spots for that location. They will be available on a first come/first serve basis. When you arrive at the campground, you can pay the people there for your reserved spot. If you do not get one of the reserved spots, you will need to contact the campground or make other arrangements. I've already make pre-reservations so they expect my call back, but I am making the final reservations on the 24th/25th of May. If you want a reserved spot, leave a note on the page and for how many people on your campsite.
If you have an RV or camper, I would ask you contact the campground and reserve a spot. The phone number is on their website (above).
That night, we'll have a BYOBBQ&B cookout to talk about the adventures that day and so forth? In the morning, we can all head out someplace for greasy breakfast or pool our resources and pot-luck it -- we can decide that morning.
Because of the KM's to cover, car pooling may be a good idea for some. At press time (May 18th, 2004) there are 21 caches on the Island, and the shortest route I could plan was 705km so it's VERY unlikely someone can get them all in one day. However, odder things have happened. Don't forget to save $40 for the bridge to come back to NB! (No charge to go there, they only pay you if you want to leave).
There will be prizes for 1st, 2nd, & 3rd most caches that day. Tiebreaker rules: In the event of a tie, the winner will be determined by the following criteria:
- Getting the 2 furthest caches on the Island from each other. (GCGGYV & GC70A6)
- Adding up the total stars (Difficulty and Terrain) for all caches completed for the run.
- In the unlikely event of a tie at this stage, the competitors still tied will need to sing to break the tie. Yes you heard that correctly. They will need to pick a song to sing out of the book, and the rest of the competitors there will vote on the winner.
FOR PEI CACHERS: We'd LOVE you to come on over and join us for the cookout!
I'll see you all Dashing across the Red Dirt!
